Location: The New England colony of Boston.
 
Date: April 18th, 1689
 
Leaders: Inhabitants of the Boston colony. The inhabitants of Boston and other surrounding colonies combined into a "mob" and started to arrest government officials including Edmond Andros, The person in charge of Boston at that time.(New England Historical Society)

THE PURITAN COLONISTS:

  • Colonist were angry at Andros fro his support of the Anglican Church.(New England Historical Society)

  • Andros force the main Puritan Church to hold an Anglican ceremony for Good Friday.(New England Historical Society)

  • Andros tried to push Puritans to the Anglican church and they became angry.(New England Historical Society)

  • Created a "Mob" and forced Andros to leave the Puritans alone and go back to England.(New England Historical Society)

The English

  • Andros arrived in Boston in December of 1686.(New England Historical Society)

  • Given orders by James II to govern the colony.(New England Historical Society)

  • Tried to get Puritans to adopt the Anglican faith but they refused.(New England Historical Society)

  • Andros asked to buy a plot of land to build an Anglican Church but the townspeople refused.(New England Historical Society)

  • Andros also asked to use the Puritan meeting house to use as a get together for other Anglicans. The Puritans refused again.(New England Historical Society)

  • Andros surrendered to over 2,000 Massachusettes Militia on April 18th, 1689.(New England Historical Society)

  • Spent a year in American jail, then returned home to England.(New England Historical Society)

Massachusettes Militia(Mob) arrest Andros and force him to surrender.

Puritans relaease Andros from jail and send him back to England

Consequences:

How This Contributed To the American Identity:

  • As you would guess, this left a bad taste in the mouth of The Church of England and Government of England. 

  • Spark Conflict between both Countries.

  • This event contributes to the American Identity because it is the start of America standing up to the "Big Stick". The start of not letting England walk all over the American Colonies sparked other conflicts including the fight for American Independence, The Revolutionary War. (Examiner)
